No. 5-B - Second Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers National Flag This flag is the thirty-four star national flag carried by the Second Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers. On the bottom red stripe the letters "EAST TENN." as a battle credit are decipherable. Probably it was used from 1861 until late 1864. No. 5-C - Second Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers Regimental Color This is a counterpart of the color labeled 5-A except that the regimental number is not painted on the ribbon below the eagle. This regimental color of the Second Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, reveals no hint of the circumstances under which it was used. No. 5-D - Second Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers National Flag Bearing thirty-five stars in five rows of seven each, this national flag was presented to the Second Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, by Governor Augustus W. Bradford on behalf of the State late in 1864 or early in 1865. On the middle red stripe is inscribed, "2nd Regt. Md. V." No. 5-E - Second Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers Regimental Color Presented to the Second Regiment, Infantry, by Governor Augustus W. Bradford on behalf of the State late in 1864 or early in 1865, this is a blue regimental color with the State coat of arms on its obverse and on its reverse the United States coat of arms with thirteen stars above. A red ribbon under the State arms carries battle credits for Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Frederick, and East Tennessee. The Second Regiment, Infantry, was not incorporated into the Maryland Brigade. It served during much of the war under General Ambrose E. Burnside and saw combat in North Carolina, the Antietam Campaign, the siege and defense of Knoxville, Tenn., and from Spotsylvania to Appomattox. No. 6-A - Third Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers National Flag This thirty-five star national flag, was presented to the Third Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, by Governor Augustus W. Bradford on behalf of the State, late in 1864 or early in 1865. — 11 —
