Twenty-seven people appeared as character witnesses for Hiss. Among them were Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, who had known Hiss when he was a law student at Harvard and had recommended him to serve as law clerk for Justice Holmes. Justice Stanley Reed said that Hiss's reputation at the Justice Department was one of "integrity, loyalty, and veracity." Some others who testified to his integrity were Admiral Arthur J. Hepburn; Calvert Magruder, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit (Boston); and Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois.
