Biography:

Born James Shaw Franklin, December 9, 1827. Son of Thomas Franklin (4/30/1786-5/13/1865) and Elizabeth (Shaw) Franklin (10/21/1786-1/4/1865). Never married. Died March 7, 1881. Buried St. Anne's Cemetery, Annapolis, Maryland.

Elected first State's Attorney for Anne Arundel County, November 5, 1851. Presidental elector for Anne Arundel County, December 5, 1860. Clerk, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1867-1879. Franklin was pronounced by many as a Southern sympathizer and Secessionist. In Richmond, Virginia, he enlisted in the Second Maryland Infantry of the Confederate Army. He served as a first lieutenant in Company D for almost three years.
