(House Joint Resolution No. 1)

A House Joint Resolution concerning

Louis L. Goldstein Day

FOR the purpose of acknowledging Louis L. Goldstein's lifetime commitment as a
public servant to the citizens of Maryland; and declaring March 14 of each year
to be "Louis L. Goldstein Day".

WHEREAS, Louis L. Goldstein served in State elected office for more than 55
years and through his service exemplified the epitome of the spirit of a brilliant public
servant and as such, brought great honor to the State of Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Louis L. Goldstein, born on March 14, 1913, began his political
career in 1938 when he was elected as Delegate for Calvert County, but proudly left
this position in 1942 to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps where he fought for his
country in the Asiatic and Pacific theaters; and

WHEREAS, Upon discharge from the Marine Corps in 1946, Louis L. Goldstein
returned to Maryland to begin a most noteworthy political career serving as a Senator
from Calvert County from 1947 through 1958, President of the Senate from 1955
through 1958, and Comptroller of the Treasury from 1958 through 1998, in effect,
making Mr. Goldstein the only individual who has held a State elected office for more
than 55 years; and

WHEREAS, Louis L. Goldstein was not only a product of Maryland schools, but
also a champion of public education in this State as exemplified by his actions as a
member of the Board of Public Works and by the many honorary degrees conferred
upon him during his lifetime; and

WHEREAS, Louis L. Goldstein was well known for the glad tidings he bestowed
upon any and every person he came in contact with in the form of a gold-colored
aluminum coin bearing the words "God Bless y'all real good", endearing him to all;
and

WHEREAS, On July 3, 1998, Louis L. Goldstein passed away after spending the
evening engaged in a Fourth of July family tradition of reading the Declaration of
Independence; and

WHEREAS, The State of Maryland and the General Assembly wish to express
deepest respect for, and deep gratitude to, Louis L. Goldstein, and to establish an
appropriate day in honor of his outstanding service to the State of Maryland; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
General Assembly acknowledges the enormous contributions and achievements of
Louis L. Goldstein during his lifetime and in the words of Mr. Goldstein himself, "God
Bless 'him' real good"; and be it further
