23. Emily Le Compte Be it remembered that the following Bill of Sale was from Ex.d recorded on the 1.st day of September 1847, To wit: William Mears Know all men by these presents that I William Mears for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars current money to me in hand paid by Emily Le Compte have granted, bargained & sold and by these presents do grant, bargain and sell unto the said Emily Le Compte my negro Girl named Harriet aged about four years a slave for life and sound in body & mind To have and to hold the said Negro Girl Harriet as above bargained and sold unto the said Emily Le Compte, her heirs, executors, Administrators and Assigns against me the said William Mears, my heirs, executors and Administrators and against all and every other person or persons shall and will warrant and defend. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty eighth day of August (1847) Eighteen hundred and forty seven. Test J. W. Henry William Mears (Seal) State of Maryland County, To wit: On this twenty eighth day of August 1847 before me the subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for said County & state personally appeared William Mears and acknowledged the above Bill of sale or instrument of writing to be his act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof. Acknowledged before J. W. Henry J. P Charlotte A. H. Page Be it remembered that the following Deed of Paid to Ex.d Manumission was recorded September 3.d 1847. Jenkins Bayly, Negro To all whom it may concern be it known that I Charlotte A. H. Page of Dorchester County in the state of Maryland for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving have released from Slavery, liberated, manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery, liberate, manumit and set free my negro Man named Jinkins Bayley being of the age of thirty years and able to work and gain a sufficient livehood & Maintenance and him the said Negro Man named Jinkins Bayly I do declare to be henceforth free, manumitted and discharged from all manner of service or servitude to me, my Executors or Administrators forever. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of September Eighteen hundred and forty seven. Ann Page W.m W. Le Compte Charlotte A. H.
