CHAPTER 548
(Senate Bill 481)

AN ACT to repeal Section 14A-9 of the Code of Public Local Laws
of Anne Arundel County (1957 Edition, being Article 2 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title "Anne Arundel
County", sub-title "Chapter 14A. People's Court of Anne Arundel
County", as added by Chapter 894 of the Acts of 1963, and to enact
a new Section 14A-9 in lieu thereof, to stand in the place of the
section repealed; and to repeal and re-enact, with amendments,
Section 14A-11 of the said Code of Public Local Laws of Anne
Arundel County; to provide for the appointment of justices of the
peace and committing magistrates for Anne Arundel County and
to provide for their salary and their jurisdiction; to provide for
an additional constable for the People's Court, and to authorize
People's Court clerks to administer oaths; and relating generally
to justices of the peace, committing magistrates and personnel of
the People's Court of Anne Arundel County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 14A-9 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Anne Arun-
del County (1957 Edition, being Article 2 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland), title "Anne Arundel County", sub-title "Chapter
14A. People's Court of Anne Arundel County", as added by Chapter
894 of the Acts of 1963, be and it is hereby repealed, and that a new-
Section 14A-9 be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand in
the place of the section repealed; and that Section 14A-11 of the said
Code of Public Local Laws of Anne Arundel County be and it is
hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, and all to read as
follows:

14A-9.

(a)   The Governor, by and with the advice of the Senate, shall ap-
point eight (8)
TEN (10) justices of the peace in Anne Arundel
County, four of whom shall be designated committing magistrates
and four
SIX of whom shall be designated deputy committing mag-
istrates. Where practicable, they shall be from different geographical
areas of the county so as to best serve the needs of all the county.
They shall have throughout the county all the powers and jurisdic-
tion vested by law in justices of the peace other than trial magis-
trates and substitute trial magistrates.

(b)   The committing magistrates shall devote their full time to the
duties of their office and shall each receive an annual salary of five
thousand dollars ($5,000.00). The deputy committing magistrates
shall each receive an annual salary of twelve hundred dollars
($1,200.00).
FIFTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS ($1,500.00).

(c)  The committing magistrates and deputy committing magis-
trates shall sit at such times and places and shall perform such duties,
including the issuance of warrants, the taking of bail bonds, the ac-
ceptance of collateral, and clerical functions as are assigned to them
by the Chief Judge of the People's Court. In the conduct and admin-
istration of their affairs they shall conform to such practices and
procedures, consistent with law, as are prescribed by the Chief Clerk
of the People's Court with the approval of the Chief Judge thereof.
