Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

37.

(e) The Sheriff of Caroline County shall receive an annual salary
of two thousand four hundred dollars ($2,400) and shall be allowed
a sum not exceeding one dollar ($1.00) a day for boarding and
keeping each prisoner confined in the county jail, and he shall keep a
correct and full list of all prisoners committed to his custody,
showing the full length of time for which each one is committed
and by what authority. He shall appoint a deputy, who shall re-
ceive an annual salary of two thousand eight hundred dollars
($2,800). He may also appoint additional deputies as may be nec-
essary, with the approval of the County Commissioners as to num-
ber and compensation.
The Sheriff of Caroline County and his
deputies
shall [also] be entitled to the sum of eight cents (8c) per
mile for the use of [his automobile] their automobiles in connection
with [his] their official duties. [He may appoint such deputies as
may be necessary for the enforcement of the duties of his office
and at such compensation as he shall fix, with the approval of the
County Commissioners as to number and compensation.] The
Sheriff shall also appoint a matron and cook for the county jail,
and she shall receive an annual salary of eighteen hundred dollars
($1,800).

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby de-
clared to be an emergency measure and necessary for the imme-
diate preservation of the public health and safety, and having been
passed by a yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of the
members elected to each of the two houses of the General Assembly,
the same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 38)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 291 of
Article 93 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Testamentary Law," subtitle "Register of Wills," author-
izing notice to devisees and legatees to be given by certified mail,
in addition to registered mail.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 291 of Article 93 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Testamentary Law," subtitle "Register of
Wills" be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

The register of Wills in each county and the City of Baltimore
