CHAPTER 24
(House Bill 3)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (x)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1961 Supple-
ment), title "Sheriffs, " sub-title "Compensation and Duties, " to
increase the compensation of the Sheriff of Baltimore City.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (x) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1961 Supplement), title "Sheriffs, " sub-title "Compensation
and Duties, " be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(x) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an annual salary of
[$10, 000. 00] $12, 500. 00 $11, 500. 00. He shall appoint an under-sheriff
and chief deputy at an annual salary of $7, 000, one writ clerk and two
assistant writ clerks at an annual salary of $5, 500 each, one stenog-
rapher and docket clerk at an annual salary of $4, 400 and thirty-
four deputy sheriffs at annual salaries of $5, 500 each and such
assistants at such compensation as shall be provided for in the
annual ordinance of estimates of Baltimore City. Provision shall
also be made in said ordinance for the expenses of the office of
the Sheriff, including the purchase and maintenance of motor ve-
hicles, and the mayor and city council shall have the same power
with respect to the salaries of the office of Sheriff as it has under
the city charter with respect to the salaries of all municipal
departments.

The mayor and city council shall pay monthly to the Sheriff of
Baltimore City one-twelfth of the amount provided in the ordinance
of estimates for the expenses of the Sheriff's office. Within thirty
days after December 31st in each and every year the Sheriff of
Baltimore City shall pay to the mayor and city council of Baltimore
any of the unexpended expense funds advanced during the year pre-
ceding said December 31st, and render a detailed account to the
mayor and city council of Baltimore of all expense funds received
and expended by him.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall not be
construed to extend to or affect the Sheriff in office on the effective
date of this Act, but this Act shall take effect with the next term
of office.

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1962.
