1130                             Laws of Maryland                       [Ch. 746

"Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", relating to the
compensation of the employees to the Sheriff of Baltimore City.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (x) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:

37.

(x) Baltimore City.—In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive
an annual salary of $10,000. He shall appoint an under-sheriff and
chief deputy at an annual salary of [$6,500.00] $7,500 $7,000, one
writ clerk and two assistant writ clerks at an annual salary of
[$5,000] $6,000 $5,500 each, one stenographer and docket clerk at
an annual salary of [$3,900] $4,400 and such number of deputy
sheriffs as may be authorized in the annual ordinance of estimates
in Baltimore City at annual salaries of [$4,500] $5,600 $5,000 each.
Provision shall also be made in said ordinance for the expenses of
the office of the Sheriff, including the purchase and maintenance of
motor vehicles, and the mayor and city council shall have the same
power with respect to the salaries and expenses of the office of
Sheriff as it has under the city charter with respect to the salaries
and expenses of all municipal departments, except as otherwise
herein provided.

FROM AND AFTER JANUARY 1, 1960, THE COMPENSA-
TION OF THE SEVERAL EMPLOYEES IN THE OFFICE OF
THE SHERIFF OF BALTIMORE CITY SHALL BE AS PRO-
VIDED FROM TIME TO TIME IN THE ANNUAL ORDINANCE
OF ESTIMATES OF BALTIMORE CITY; EXCEPT THAT FOR
A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS FOLLOWING JANUARY 1, 1960,
THE COMPENSATION OF THE RESPECTIVE EMPLOYEES
SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN AS PROVIDED IN THIS SUB-
SECTION.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959 JANUARY 1, 1960.
