Levy authorised to
pay James River
for money ad-
vanced

CHAP. LXXVI.

An Act for the relief of James Bowers, of Kent County.
Whereas it is represented to the general assembly, that the pub-
lic gaol for Kent county, was unroofed, and otherwise materially
damaged, by a tornado in November last, and that it was urgently
necessary to repair it, for the security and comfort of the prisoners
therein confined; that the work has been completed, and that James
Bowers, one of the justices of the levy court for said county, has
advanced the money to purchase materials, and pay the workmen,
which otherwise must have been done upon credit, whereby a con-
siderable sum has been saved to the county, therefore,
1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
levy court for Kent county, be and they are hereby authorised to
settle the account of the said James Bowers, lor repairs on the said
gaol, and at their next levy to levy on the assessable property of
said county, a sum of money sufficient to pay the said James Bow-
ers the sum so advanced by him, together with interest thereon, at
the rate of six per cent, per annum, and that the same shall be col-
lected, by the collector of said county, and paid to the said James
Bowers, or his order.

pealed

CHAP. LXXVII.

1 A Supplement to an act for the better protection of Slaveholders in the several
Counties therein mentioned.

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That from
and after the passage of this act, the first, second, third, and
fourth sections of the act, to which this is a supplement, shall not be
construed to extend to the city of Annapolis, except for the purpose
of ascertaining the pains and penalties inflicted by the fifth section
of said act.

CHAP. LXXVIII.

' An Act to incorporate the Skipton Turnpike Company.

1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That a
company be incorporated for making a turnpike road from some
point at or near Colonel Thomas Greenwell's Ford, on the Potomac
river, in the state of Maryland, through the town of Skipton, in
Allegany county, and thence to the town of Cumberland, in said
county.
2. And be it enacted, That subscription books for a capital stock
of sixty thousand dollars, in shares of twenty dollars each, be open-
ed, and that subscriptions be taken for twenty-five thousand dollars
of the same at the town of Skipton aforesaid, under the direction of
John J. Jacob, James M. Cresap and Jacob Lantz; for thirty-five
thousand dollars in the town of Cumberland, under the direction of
David Shriver, junior, John Burbridge and Alexander Sanford;
who are appointed commissioners for that purpose; who shall, on
the first Monday of June next, procure books, and enter as fol-
lows: "We whose names are hereunto subscribed, do promise to
pay to the president and managers and company of The Skipton
Turnpike Company, the sum of twenty dollars for each share of
stock in said company opposite to our respective names, agreeably
to an art of the general assembly of Maryland, entitled, An act to
incorporate The Skipton Turnpike Company. Witness our hands
and seals this —— day of ——, eighteen hundred and ——; and
