18 TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT
PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
SOCIETY OF AMERICAN ARCHIVISTS
The single professional organization which concerns itself with all
aspects of Archives and Records Management is The Society of American
Archivists. Our staff is encouraged, therefore, to participate as much
as possible in its work. The Archivist has been a member of this
Society for twenty years and he has taken an active interest in it. He
was especially pleased, therefore, to have been selected as one of the
first Fellows of The Society of American Archivists at the annual
meeting of 1958. He also served as a member of the Committee on
Professional Standards and Training and the Committee on Federal-
State Relations. The Assistant Archivist continued as Chairman of
the Committee on Preservation Methods and as a member of the
State Records Committee.
The lack of sufficient funds in our budget prevented any of us
from attending the annual meeting of the Society held at Salt Lake
City, but the joint meeting with the American Historical Association
held in Washington, December 28, 1958, found the following staff
members present: the Archivist, Mr. Skordas, Mr. Beach, Mr. Weather-
ly and Mr. White.
The Archivist was asked to represent the Committee on Federal-
State Relations at a meeting in Washington called by the Office of
Civil and Defense Mobilization in order to prepare plans for the use
and maintenance of governmental records in the event of national
disaster. Mr. Beach accompanied the Archivist.
RELATED ORGANIZATIONS
The Hall of Records was happy to participate in the annual meet-
ing of the American Society of Genealogists which was held in Annapolis,
October 10-12, 1958. In the preliminary planning, the Archivist was
glad to assist the local arrangements committee, consisting of Jean
Stephenson, Milton Rubincam, and Herbert F. Seversmith. And a
cordial invitation to meet here was sent by Governor McKeldin to
Arthur Adams, Society President. This group came to the Hall of
Records on the second day of their meeting. They were welcomed
by the Archivist and then escorted through the building. Later in the
morning an opportunity was provided for individual research. The
