ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 13

Thomas completed his term as Secretary in October 1953, and Miss Gardner
was a member of the Committee on Microphotography. The Annual Meet-
ing of the Society of American Archivists held at Dearborn, Michigan,
September 13-15, 1953, was attended by Mr. Thomas and John P. Hively,
Junior Archivist. Miss Gardner attended the National Microfilm Association
meeting held in Cleveland, April 1 and 2, 1954.

We were asked several times during the year to check references for
articles published in the Maryland Historical Magazine and for books and
articles which have appeared elsewhere. The Archivist published a review
of Le Probleme des Termites ef Autres Agents Destrnctcurs Aux Archives
de la Reunion, by Yves Perotin in The American Archivist, January 1954.
And Mr. Thomas published four reviews in The United States Quarterly
Book Review, including one on Roger P. Bristol's Maryland Imprints, 1801-
1810. The second volume of the Calendar of the Red Books, which appeared
in fiscal year 1953, was reviewed this year by John Melville Jennings in
The American Archivist and by Keach Johnson in The Journal of Southern
History. The Archivist is gratified to report that both reviews were com-
mendatory.

On the local scene, the Archivist continued as a member of the Board
of Historic Annapolis, Incorporated, and also as a member of its Historical
Committee. He attended a pre-organization meeting of the Calvert County
Historical Society at Solomons, in company with Mr. Skordas. Subsequently
we were able to help that group and Senator Goldstein in their preparations
for the tercentenary celebration of that County which was held after the
end of the fiscal year. The Archivist spoke before the St. Mary's County
Historical Society at their January meeting, 1954, and he also attended their
commemorative meeting held on Maryland Day at the old State House in
St. Mary's City. He also attended the one-hundredth anniversary reception
of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union at Mount Vernon,
October 24, 1953, and the Homecoming of St. Luke's Church at the Pratt
Mansion, Queen Anne's County, October 24, 1953. The Governor's State
Art Committee, of which the Archivist is a member, enjoyed a dinner meet-
ing at the Executive Mansion, July 21, 1953. Mr. Skordas and Mr. Thomas
attended the annual meeting of the Kent County Historical Society April
29, 1954, and Mr. Thomas spoke at the Jubilee Dinner of the National
Genealogical Society in Washington and at the memorial meeting in honor
of Augustine Herman, sponsored by the Augustine Herman Bohemian His-
torical Society at Bohemia Manor, May 23, 1954.
