18 FIFTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT

dated June 26, 1950, and lists the following records as having been
destroyed:

Cancelled Checks, 1925-1933, 1,500 items.

Letters of Transmittal, 1935-1945, 525 items.

Invoices, 1919-1945, 55,000 items.

EMPLOYMENT AND REGISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF

In a letter of May 25, 1950, the Employment Commissioner expressed
an interest in destroying certain records of his department and inquired
about the possibility of placing the destruction on a schedule basis. In our
reply, we cited the act governing destruction and briefly described the pro-
cedure to be followed. At the end of the year, the matter was still
pending.

EMPLOYMENT SECURITY, DEPARTMENT OF

On July 26, 1949, the Department of Employment Security offered to
transfer a large quantity of records of its Employment Service Division.
They were refused by the Archivist and eventually destroyed. The certifi-
cate of destruction is dated September 13, 1949. A list of the material
destroyed follows:

Wage Record Cards, 1944-1946, 2,500 boxes (2,000 per box).

Appeals Referee Decisions, 19394945, 40 boxes (1,000 per box).

Servicemen's Benefit Cards, 19454946, 700 boxes (2,000 per box).

Miscellaneous Correspondence, 19444946, 20 transfer file boxes.

Separation Notices, 19454946, 56 boxes (3,000 per box).

Original Claim Cards, 19444945, 110 boxes (2,000 per box).

Miscellaneous Time Records, 19384945, 12 transfer file boxes.

A few months later on November 18, 1949, the Department sub-
mitted a list of records of its Appeals Division for deposit in the Hall of
Records. In refusing the records, the Archivist pointed out that some of
them were less than three years old and could not legally be destroyed. The
certificate of destruction and list of records destroyed were forwarded to
us in a letter dated February 27, 1950. Three of the records series were
considered to be of sufficient importance, to be preserved on microfilm. In
the list which follows the boxes containing cards hold about 1,500 each and
the transfer cases about 8,000 pieces of paper:

Wage Records Cards, 1947, 800 boxes (microfilmed).

Contribution Reports, 1936-1943, 60 transfer cases (microfilmed).
