The House of Delegates proposed laying a tax on all citizens of Maryland in order to support the various religious or-
ganizations in the state. The money was to be collected by the sheriff and turned over to the churches in the county in pro-
portion to their membership.

The House of Delegates resolved to have this bill printed in the Maryland Gazette and the Baltimore newspapers and to
have 1000 copies distributed as handbills. It is likely that either this item or number 372 was printed in Baltimore. The
Library of Congress copy contains on the the verso of the second leaf a dialogue by John Kersey showing what he thought
the results of the bill would be. There is a third edition of this act for the support of the clergy in the Maryland Diocesan
Library printed in one column on both sides of a folio sheet measuring 13 x 8 1/2 inches.
