Cassius of South Carolina who has been identified as Acclanus Burke, a chief justice of the State, wrote Considerations on
the Society, or Order of Cincinnati ... Proving that it creates a race of hereditary patricians or nobility (Evans, 17862). The
attack on the society of officers of the army and navy which had been formed in April, 1783, was one of the many which
greeted this secret order. The author of the defense of the society has not been identified. Signed on the last page: "A Mem-
ber of the Society of Cincinnati. Annapolis, December 15, 1783."
