426 ARTICLE 2.

serve the peace upon the public road leading from dark's Station, on the
Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railway, to Stewart's
corner, on the old telegraph road, and from thence over the public road
to the Fifth District line and from the Fifth District line to Academy
Junction by way of Oklahoma.

The said police officer shall receive a monthly salary of forty-five dol-
lars per month from the first day of May to the first day of December,
in each year but shall not receive pay for the other months of the year.

Said police officer shall have all the powers of a County Constable and
during the months of each year when he is not receiviug pay from the
county he shall be entitled to receive all the fees allowed a County Con-
stable in making arrests and performing the other duties performed by
constables in the county.

The said County Commissioners of Anne Arundel County shall arm
and equip said police officer and shall pass such rules and regulations as
they may deem proper to have the said police officer efficiently patrol said
public roads.

238. The County Commissioners of Anne Arundel County be and they
are hereby required to maintain and operate a ferry from Taylorsville,
on the west side of South River to the public road on the east side of said
river, and for this purpose they are directed to purchase or have con-
structed a ferry boat that will convey foot passengers, wagons, carriages
and other vehicles, and also to obtain a proper cable for the same, and
after the same shall have been purchased and constructed they shall em-
ploy a ferryman to take charge of said ferry boat, whose salary shall not
exceed ten hundred and twenty dollars per annum, payable monthly.

239. The Governor is hereby authorized and directed to employ in
the months of January and July, respectively, in each year, a competent
auditor and accountant, who shall not be a resident of Anne Arundel
County, to examine the books in the office of the County Commissioners
and the County Treasurer of Anne Arundel County, whose duty it shall
be to examine and audit said books in said months annually and report
the same to the County Commissioners, who are hereby directed to publish
semi-annually in said months the result of said examinations; and for
failure to do the same all of said Commissioners shall be subject to a fine
of ten dollars, to be recovered before a justice of the peace in a civil
action in that behalf brought by the State's Attorney for said county; the
auditor so employed shall not be paid more than two hundred dollars
per annum, and the State of Maryland shall pay pro rata of the same
according to the tax rate of the county and State, respectively, and the
County Commissioners of Anne Arundel County shall pay the balance.
