NAPOLEON B. STEWARD, Democrat, Prince George's County; born
September 4, 1888, at Slate Hill, Pennsylvania. Attended the public
schools of Delta, Pennsylvania; Millersville State Teachers College,
Millersville, Pennsylvania, and the University of Maryland. Physi-
cian and surgeon. Member of the Board of Supervisors of Elections
Prince George's County, 1940-1948. Medical Examiner State Insur-
ance Department since 1947. Unmarried. Elected to the House of
Delegates in 1942.
C. FERDINAND SYBERT, Speaker, Democrat, Howard County; born
at Loretta, Pennsylvania, September 16, 1900. Attended parochial
schools in Elkridge and Baltimore; Loyola College, Baltimore, gradu-
ating in 1922. Graduated from the Law School of the University of
Maryland in 1926 and admitted to the Bar the same year. Served as
Counsel to the Board of County Commissioners of Howard County,
1931-1934 and as State's Attorney for Howard County, 1934-1946.
Served as Appeal Agent Howard County Selective Service Board,
1940-1945. President of the Howard County Bar Association, Mem-
ber State Bar Association. Married. Elected to the House of Dele-
gates in 1946, elected Speaker, 1947, 1949 and 1950.
CHESTER W. TAWNEY, Democrat, Baltimore 3rd; born at Havre de
Grace, Maryland, July 10, 1907. Attended the public schools of
Havre de Grace and the University of Maryland, graduating in 1931.
President of small loan company. Married. Appointed to the House
of Delegates in 1947.
HARRY 0. THOMMEN, Democrat, Baltimore 6th; born in Baltimore
July 29, 1909. Attended parochial school in Baltimore, Loyola High
School, Loyola College and the University of Baltimore School of Law.
Attorney and member of the Bar. Served with the U. S. Army Engi-
neers, 845th Engineering Battalion as Staff Sergeant during World
War II in European Theatre. Member of Democratic State Central
Committee 1946-1948. Married. Appointed to the House of Dele-
gates in 1948.
WELLS W. TODD, Republican, Somerset County; born at Holland
Island, Maryland, May 21, 1893. Attended Holland Island public
schools. Sea-food dealer. Member of Legislative Council 1947-49.
Married. Elected to the House of Delegates in 1942.
CLARENCE E. TYLER, Democrat, Anne Arundel County; born at
Monie, Maryland, November 8,1887. Attended public school at Monie.
Contractor and realtor. Unmarried. Elected to the House of Dele-
gates in 1942.
JOHN W. VALIS, Democrat, Baltimore 2nd; born at Baltimore, Feb-
ruary 18, 1912. Attended parochial school in Baltimore, and Calvert
Hall. Printer. Served as Corporal, Company I, 313th Infantry, in
European Theatre, 1943-1945. Married. ' Elected to the House of
Delegates in 1946.
C. CLIFTON VIRTS, Democrat, Frederick County; born at Leesburg,
Virginia, March 3, 1910. Attended Leesburg Public School; the Vir-
ginia School for the Blind, Staunton, the University of Virginia, and
the Law School of the University of Maryland. Admitted to the Bar
in 1940. Married. Elected to the House of Delegates in 1946.
E. CLYDE WALLS, Democrat, Queen Anne's County; born in
Queen Anne's County, January 25, 1900. Attended the public schools
of that county, and Washington College, Chestertown, graduating in
1919. Graduate School of Columbia University, M.A., 1926. Hardware
and farm implement dealer; former Principal of high schools in
Queen Anne's County. Served with the U, S. Army in World Wars
