Then the said Jones & Leighton went away & returned againe about midnight when all the
family was quiett & att rest Did Call to open y Doore or elses hee would breake itt open and not
being answered Did endeavour y breaking open y Door by many great blowes but with what
I knowe not wch not getting Done Did Call unto Leighton to fetch him fire Swearing hee
would burne y rogues out upon which Mr Browne Spoke to Jones asking what hee meant or
what hee wanted who replyed open y Door for I am now Come with force & have gott more
men upon which y Sd: Browne Called out att a Windowe to y Maid Servant who lay in y quarter
to fetch a Coale to light a Candle & y Doore opened & the Candle lighted I heard y maid Say
with Some others of y Servants That Two tall men besides Jones & Leighton fledd out of y
porch & went away & further Saith not : / : Edward: ffrye: / :

The Deposition of Wm: Gullick planter July y 21st: 1677:
I: y Sd: Wm: being att y house of David Browne of Manoakin on y Sixteenth Day of this instant
July & was present then Capta: Jones who after many threatning words Did lay violent hands upon
Richard Higgenbothem Taylor to thrust him out of Doores being late att night & hee y Sd: Richard
refuseing to bee gon hee being in y present Service of y Sd: Browne was by y said Jones beaten
Severall blowes & after resistance made by y said Higgenbothem William Leighton fell like-
wise upon him saying fight with a man now I will anoint yor Cods untill parted by y said Browne who
being Called Commanded the peace in y name of y Lord Proprietary: Thomas Jones aforesaid laid hold
upon y said Browne when parting Leighton & Higgenbothem & violently rent his Shirt in severall parts
Calling him Scotts rogue & Rebell this with many other threatning expressions being often repeated
as alsoe saying yt y said Browne had not a roofe or house to Cover his head for hee had gott possession of itt
& after many other threatening words hee & y said Leighton went away reeling & threatning as they went
& about midnight returned y Said Jones & Leighton & one more with them I being by y Dogs forewarned
y said Jones Did call to open y Doore & Did Sweare if itt were not opened hee would breake itt open none answe
ring hee Did violently beat att y Doore & made a great noise with many great blowes but with what I Knowe
not Chardging Leighton to fetch him fire to burne y rogues out upon which Mr: Browne spoke to y said~
Jones & asked wt: hee meaned & whether hee was not mad to Come Scareing people in that manner att ~
that time of night y said Jones abuseing y said Browne in a very ugly sort desireing hee might have his
Coat the Sd: Browne Called & Desired the woman servant Should fetch in a Coale of fire from y kitchen to
Light a Candle & further Saith not: / : ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Wm: Gullick: / : ~ ~
