In our Letter of the 20th of May to Mr Purviance in answer
to his where the Idea of the usefulness of the Gallies in the
Defence of Baltimore Town was mentioned we say "The Inde-
" pendence wants a good deal done to her to fit her for a Cruise
" the men we have are at present divided between her and the
" Chester they in concert with our Fort might be useful
" against Vessels the same end would be answered to you by
" the Baltimore and Johnson they are Gunned we have them
" ready to send up to the Indian Landing with Pork and some
" other Articles, but if you can get a Force to use them as
" Batteries, Baltimore Town may have them for that purpose,
"If men can be engaged to carry up the Baltimore and
" Johnson and act in them in Case it should become necessary
" we will on this occasion draw their pay for the little Time
" they can be wanted out of the Treasury and with the Assem-
" bly's Approbation of our Conduct." We were mistaken as
to the Johnson's being Gunned, her Guns are not mounted
tho' we have Carriages for the large Guns. These two Gallies
are now at Indian Landing if a Force can be had from Balti-
more to carry them thither we shall willingly let them go and
take the Chance of manning them we will also be glad to have
