of the Council of Maryland, 1778-1779. 415

[Council to R. Buchanan.]

In Council 24th May 1779
Sir.
We yesterday received a Letter from the Board of War
dated the 19th requesting our Attention to the Removal of the
Continental Stores: we do not know of any which may prob-
ably be in Danger from their Quantity and situation except
those at the Head of Elk which we hope are nearly removed
and the Salt & Flour at Baltimore. From what we hear,
your Flour is chiefly removed; as to the Salt, we do not know
what better can be done with it than to run it in Shallops &
Boats, as agreed on when you was here, to Chester, Susque-
hanna and the Boats of the least Draft, to Joppa and there
store it. We understand some of the Salt has been sent to
the Head of Elk to be forwarded to Philadelphia, but, unless
the Carriage can be performed by the Continental Waggons,
we would not advise sending it to the Head of Elk, for we
cannot agree to press the Farmers Waggons for that Purpose,
the Neighbourhood must be worn down already

In Council Annapolis 24th May 1779
Sir.
In your Return of Flour, you mention your having 874
Barrls three Miles from Elk Landing. We have had no par-
ticular Orders, with respect to the Disposition of the Flour, it
was to wait the Direction of the Committee on the Commy &
Quartermaster's Departmts but we think such a Quantity of
Flour so near the Head of Elk, is not in so safe a Situation as
desirable therefore we request you'll call on Colo Hollings-
worth for Teams & have it removed to Christeen that it may
be forwarded to Philadelphia from thence. If you can pur-
chase 500, or 1000 Barrls of Flour more, in a Safe Situation, not
exceeding 18/ do so, if you cannot at that Price, stop your
Purchase, we have secured the Quantity desired. By Mr
Hardman we send you 40,000 Pounds to be applied to your
Purchase. We are &ca
Saml Gilpin.

[Council to J. Calhoun.]

In Council Annapolis 25th May 1779
Sir.
We write by this Opportunity to Mr Buchanan, our Senti-
ments, with respect to the Salt. Colo Hollingsworth has not
