Law and impressing others in the stead of such as you shall
so discharge so as to keep up the Number of ten impressed
Waggons on that Service until it shall be done

(To Mr James Govane)

Ordered that John Bullen Esquire Quarter Master provide
Quarters sufficient for the accommodation of Four hundred
men in the City and Neighbourhood of Annapolis
Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to James
Howard Two thousand five hundred Pounds to be expended
in the Purchase of Wheat &ca for the Continental Army on
Acct
That the said Treasurer pay to Capt. Benjamin Brookes of
the 3d Maryld Regt one thousand Dollars to be expended in
the Recruiting Service & charged to said Regimt
That the said Treasurer pay to Capt Lilburn Williams of the
2d Regiment one thousand Dollars to be expended in the
recruiting Service & charged to said Regimt
The General Assembly having resolved that the Governor
and Council should select and set apart out of the Maryland
Navy two Gallies and one Boat such as they should think
proper for the use of this State and that they should sell and
dispose of the Ship Defence and such of the other Gallies
and Boats &ca the Governor & Council have thought proper
to select and set apart the Galley Conqueror and the Galley
Chester for the use of the State, have sold the Ship Defence
& taken the other Gallies out of Commission & advertised
them for Sale, Thomas Walker having been Capt of the Balti-
more Galley til she was put out of Commission as mentioned
before was Discharged from the Service of the State for the
Cause before recited & no other.

In Council Annapolis 18th May 1779
Sir.
We have just received yours of this Day. It would be
a desirable Thing, merely with a View to our own Security,
that the Virginia Troops on their Way to the Southward,
should stay for our immediate Defence, but we are appre-
hensive that such a Measure might interfere with a concerted
Plan in which those Troops may be designed to act an essential

Part and we certainly have no Power to interfere with our
Orders. If there was an absolute Certainty of the Enemy
being destined for Baltimore, we should strongly recommend
to the Virginia Troops to join us in opposing the common
