Conservation Assessment Program
of the Institute of Museum and Library Services

A Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) is the first step towards a more in-depth look at the specific conservation needs of a museum collection. Unlike an object-by-object survey, this conservation assessment provides an overview of all of the museum's collections, as well as its environmental conditions, and policies and procedures relating to collections care. The assessment report assists the institution by:

  • providing recommendations and priorities for conservation action, both immediate and long-term,
  • facilitating the development of long-range institutional plans for the care and preservation of the collection, and
  • serving as a fundraising tool for future conservation projects.

The CAP supports a two day site visit by conservation professionals to perform the assessment as well as funds up to three days of their time to write the report. The amount of grant money requested is $6,510 which requires an institutional match of $480.
