John Work Garrett, president of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and a member of the Peabody's board of trustees, donated to the Institute a collection of plaster casts representing the finest statues of antiquity. The casts were chosen by artists in Rome and were shipped to Baltimore where they were installed in the Peabody's sculpture gallery in the winter of 1880-1881.
