The Peabody Art Collection is an outstanding collection of 19th and early 20th century American art. For many years it was housed in the Peabody Institute in Baltimore which was founded by philanthropist George Peabody (1795-1869). The collection was acquired in June 1996 by the state of Maryland, to be administered by the Commission on Artistic Property of the Maryland State Archives. Many of the works are presently on loan to Baltimore institutions, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Homewood House, the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Maryland Historical Society, and the Walters Art Gallery. An exhibit of works from the collection was recently held at Government House. Called “A Taste for the Fine Arts: George Peabody’s Gift to Maryland,” the exhibit featured 19 paintings and sculpture from the collection.
The Peabody Art Collection consists of paintings, sculpture, miniatures, pastels, decorative arts, manuscripts, photographs, and a variety of works on paper. Primarily featuring works by nineteenth century American painters and sculptors, the scope of the collection ranges from the thirteenth through the twentieth centuries.
