Barbara Oberfeld Mandel

MSA SC 1545-1193. 1973 by Henry B. Cooper (b. 1907).

Barbara Oberfeld Mandel was the wife of Marvin Mandel (b. 1920), the fifty-sixth governor of Maryland, serving in office from 1969-1979. They were married on June 8, 1941. Originally from Baltimore, Mrs. Mandel was an active campaigner and political enthusiast throughout her husband's long career prior to becoming First Lady. The Mandels have one son, Gary, and a daughter, Ellen (Mandel) Kahn. While presiding over Government House, Mrs. Mandel took an active interest in its history and furnishings. She re-discovered several items from the state's collection, previously in storage, and installed them into the state rooms. Barbara and Marvin Mandel were divorced in 1974.
