PART 2: BIOGRAPHY

PART 2: BIOGRAPHY

Often, the starting point in the search for historic sites begins with biography. Where did the people of the time live, work, worship? What buildings were important to their lives? Who were the important people of an era? And what of the common folk? The following biographical sketch depicts the life of Whitfield Winsey, an African American physician whose story vividly portrays the challenges and triumphs facing the nation's black citizens after the Civil War. Unfortunately, many of the sites related to the life and career of Winsey were destroyed by the Great Fire. His connections with hospitals and fraternal organizations, however, lead to several structures still standing.
