PLANS AND PROMISE

The 1994 summer program proved the potential of undertaking historic site research relating to Baltimore's African American heritage beginning with a document-based approach rather than a search for structures. In order to fulfill the full promise of last summer's work, more research needs to be done, first gather more information about some of the sites identified so far. Other windows of access must be opened on the African American community by focusing on other topics and time spans and the document-based research system applied to them. CHRS will also be refined in the process. When the electronic environment is complete, then the information can be shared with other researchers, institutions, and even over the Internet. Most importantly, once a sufficient body of evidence is gathered, the community of Baltimore can be approached through public educational programs designed to increase awareness of the city's past and the importance of buildings in the city today.
