Maryland Electronic Capital Homepage Design Contest

Contest does not officially end until midnight tonight! Finalists:
  1. Alberto Tabian (will attend)
    Woodlawn High School, Baltimore (Senior)
    lives in Baltimore
    Would like to go to University of Maryland, College Park and major in computer science
    No formal classes in html. Self-taught and in-home mentoring. Learned a number of softwares at home over the last year which include html editors, graphics software, and mapedit. Used all these tools in designing and producing Web pages.

  2. Brad Hamblin & Rich Leland (will attend)
    both live in Baltimore
    Richard Leland and Brad Hamblin are both seniors at Eastern Technical High School.
    Richard Leland would like to go to the Maryland Institute, College of Art and major in Visual Communications.
    Brad Hamblin would like to go to Catonsville Community College and major in Computer Graphics.
    Neither Rich nor Brad have taken any HTML courses. They started from scratch and received help from books and instructor, Eric Wallen.

  3. Ray Wenderlich (will attend)
    Ray is a senior at St. Mary's High School in Annapolis.
    lives in Huntingtown, Maryland
    He is undecided on where to attend college, but his top choices include MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, and Georgia Tech.
    He would like to have a double major in Computer Science and Writing.
    Most of his HTML knowledge is self-taught.

  4. Paul Sutton (will attend) Wilde Lake High School, Columbia (Sophomore)
    lives in Columbia
    took summer course at Howard County Community College in HTML

    College Finalists:

    1. Andrew P. Glendinning (will attend)
      St. Mary's College of Maryland (graduating senior)
      home address is Ashton, Maryland
      Double-majoring in Dramatic Arts and Math (Computer Science focus)
      self-taught Web designer.

    2. Brian Snively (cannot attend, exams Wednesday - possibly send father)
      Brian is a sophomore at University of Maryland, College Park
      home address is Columbia, Maryland He hopes to have a major in business.
      No formal classes in HTML - self taught.

    3. Juanson Pitt (will attend)
      Morgan State University (senior) majoring in Graphic Design.
      home address is Piscataway, NJ
      Graduating May 18, 1997.
      Never had any training or schooling in html or computers.

    I have emails in to all of these finalists asking for further information about themselves.


    Contest voting began Monday February 10 and ended Sunday February 23. 459 people voted.

    High School entries garnered more votes than college kids.

    1. $5,000 - MITC (Maryland Information Technology Center) Their representative at the press conference will be Jim Culp, President, Maryland Information Technology Center. They are a 501 (3)(c) organization which supports the state is a variety of education and information technology events. They report to Mike Teller and Major Riddick. At present they are working toward helping out with another NetWeekend 97 as well as the Technology Showcase at the Baltimore convention center next December. One of their major projects at the moment is working with Garrett County Community College to help their graduates and others who might be interested (Garrett Co. has 12% unemployment rate), connect with employers in the eastern part of the state and work by telecommuting.
