City Directories
From 1855 to 1890, directories for the city of Baltimore included
a separate section for the listing
of "colored persons." The Maryland State Archives proposes the
scanning of the section listing African Americans from the city
directories for the period 1855-1880. Directories would be
borrowed for scanning from a local institution.

- Baltimore When She Was What She Used to Be Collection
Photographs, 1850-1930, of Baltimore and the changes which took
place in the city. Many of the photographs depict the streets,
workplaces, and environments familiar to the African-American
Community at that time, as well as African-Americans at work and at
play. The collection was created by Mame Warren during her work on
the book Baltimore When She Was What She Used to Be: A Pictorial

Photographs from the period 1840-1940 illustrating a cross section
of Maryland life and culture, including transportation, recreation
