Lot 50

Brookeville, Montgomery County, Maryland
Owned by Richard Thomas Jr., 1794-1821; Margaret Garrigues (nee Thomas), 1821-1823

Information:

Lot 50 lies on High Street on the western edge of Brookeville, Maryland. In 1814, the lot was owned by Richard Thomas Jr., the founder of the town.1 Although Thomas did not live on the lot, there was likely a home on the lot in which one of his children lived by 1813. By that year, Thomas owned four improved lots (lots with buildings on them) in the town, and lot 50 was possibly one of those four lots.2 In 1823, two years after Thomas's death, his daughter Margaret and several family members submitted a Deed of Partition to the Montgomery County Court in which they divided their father's real estate equally amongst themselves. Under this agreement, Margaret took ownership of lot 50.3
