Presented, April 27, 1900 Donor, Directors of the Library Company of the Baltimore Bar Owner, Library Company of the Baltimore Bar Private Career: Admitted to the bar, 1780 Public Service: Member, Virginia House of Delegates, 1780 Member, House of Burgesses, 1782-1788 Delegate to the State constitutional convention for the ratification of the Federal Constitution, 1788 Special Commissioner to France, 1797-1798 U.S. House of Representatives, Virginia (Federalist), 1799-1800 U.S. Secretary of State, 1800 Chief Justice, United States Supreme Court, February 4, 1801-1835 Comments: The original portrait was damaged in the 1950’s during renovations to the courthouse. A black and white photograph taken in 1938 is the only evidence of the likeness of the portrait. The new portrait was unveiled for the 150th anniversary of the Library Company of the Baltimore Bar. |
