In Memoriam (1996-1998)

Former Members of the Society of Senates Past

Be it hereby resolved that the Senate of Maryland and the Society of Senates Past
mourn the loss of their esteemed colleagues:

William H. Amoss, on October 8, 1997
a fiscal conservative who never forgot his country origins;

John A. Cade, on November 14, 1996
a wise counselor and commanding presence who never failed to give good advice;

Louis L. Goldstein, on July 3, 1998
a beloved keeper of the public purse and a roving ambassador of goodwill;

John-Clarence North, on September 23, 1998
a respected lawyer in private practice serving Sundays as a Lector in Church;

James A. Pine, Sr., on January 22, 1998
a 'Tall Timber' of a politician exercising power to the benefit of his constituents
while telling a good tale;

Edward Turner, on June 7, 1997
a lawyer known as a kind and fine gentleman of the old school -
a 'gentleman's gentleman';

E. Homer White, Jr., on August 9, 1998
a community-oriented preservation advocate
who loved teaching tennis to children in the park;

And be it further resolved that in their public and private lives
they upheld the honor of the Senate;

And be it further resolved that the memories of their contributions to the government of
the State of Maryland and to the welfare of all Marylanders,
both as public servants and as private individuals,
be permanently preserved among the Archives of the State of Maryland,
and be made available in a manner most beneficial to the education and
enlightenment of present and future generations;

And be it further resolved that this resolution,
the Biographical Sketches of Current Members of the Society of Senates Past,
and the biographies In Memoriam accompanying this resolution be journalized,
February 11, 1999
