Between 1912 and 1922, the Peabody Art Gallery hosted exhibitions of works by contemporary artists, and many works in the Peabody Collection were acquired from these exhibitions. Marylander Alice Worthington Ball, a frequent exhibitor at the Peabody Gallery, was a member of a group of women artists who called themselves "The Six."
