Editorial Note

In editing this text, we have followed the expanded method as described in The Harvard Guide to American History (Cambridge, 1955), pp. 98-99. We hope that by correcting erratic spelling and punctuation practices the text will be easier to follow in many places. Although we have tried to retain as much of the text in its original form as possible, we have attempted to make the text more comprehensible in the following ways:

  1. We have put periods at the end of all sentences, replacing dashes which often appear in the original.

  2. We have left blanks when they appear in the text and have supplied underlined blanks in the place of illegible words or damaged text.

  3. We have indicated in brackets the folio number of the next page in the original manuscript.
