Robert Barnes

Robert Barnes Historian and Author, Robert Barnes, is a native of Baltimore City, where he was born on 22 March 1939, and has a Master's Degree in Education from what is now Towson University. He retired from teaching after 36 years in the Baltimore City Schools and is now devoting his time to genealogical research and publication projects.

He is a former President of the Maryland Genealogical and the Baltimore County Genealogical Societies.

Mr. Barnes has had over 35 years' experience tracing Maryland families. He is the author of many source books, compiled family histories, and guides, including: Maryland Marriages, 1634-1777; Maryland Marriages, 1778-1800; Maryland Marriages, 1801-1820; Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759; and Guide to Research in Baltimore City and County. His most recent work is British Roots of Maryland Families, published in 1999 by the Genealogical Publishing Company. He is the creator of two web pages at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis, where he works one day a week as a Reference Archivist.

He is currently working on a project to trace 5 generations of descendants of Passengers on the Ark and the Dove. This will be published by The Society of the Ark and the Dove in Maryland.

He is Verifying Genealogist for many lineage societies: The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of Maryland; The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Maryland; The Society of the Cincinnati in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; The Pennsylvania Society, Sons of the Revolution.  He is also  one of the Verifying Genealogists for the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of Pennsylvania.

He has taught courses in genealogical research for adult education programs at various schools and colleges in the area, as well as senior citizen centers and retirement communities in Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties.

He has given many lectures at genealogical conferences, seminars, and one day programs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and at the National Genealogical Society.

He has been married for 38 years to the former Catherine  Rockel. They have four children. [As of this writing (January 2000) they have two and one-third grandchildren.]
