JOHN H. HARRIS, c.1801-1866

Treasurer of the Eastern Shore 1841

John H. Harris was born ca. 1801 in Delaware. Sometime between 1826 and 1835 he moved to Talbot County where he made a living as a farmer and also as a surveyor. By 1837 he lived on a 300 acre plantation on the Choptank River and Bolingbroke Creek across from the town of Cambridge.

Harris took the oath as surveyor of Talbot County in 1838. He served as Treasurer of the Eastern Shore in 1841. From 1845 until 1851 he was Register of Wills for Talbot County.

Harris married twice. The name of his first wife is not known. His second wife was Sophia Jane (last name unknown). His children were Theophilus S. (ca. 1826-?), Mary M. (ca. 1835-?), Virginia S. (ca. 1843-?) and, Clara (ca. 1845-?).

John H. Harris was dead by August 28, 1866, when an inventory of his personal property was filed in Talbot County.
