The U.S. Senate is composed of two Senators chosen from each state for staggered terms of six years (U.S. Constitution, Art. 1, sec. 3).

From 1789 to 1913, U.S. Senators from Maryland were chosen by the General Assembly. Since 1913, they have been elected by the voters of Maryland (U.S. Constitution, Amendment 17).
