Historical List Adjutants General, 1794- |
In response to an act of Congress, the office of adjutant general was created in 1794 (Acts of 1793, ch. 53). By the Constitution of 1851, the adjutant general was appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Senate for a six-year term (Md. Const. 1851, Art. 9, sec. 2). Instead of limiting the term of office, the 1864 Constitution provided that the adjutant general serve at the pleasure of the governor (Md. Const. 1864, Art. 9, sec. 3). Since 1867, the adjutant general has held office until the appointment and qualification of a successor, or until removed in pursuance of the sentence of a court martial (Md. Const. 1867, Art. 9, sec. 2).
