Works on Paper:

The majority of the works on paper in the state-owned art collection are part of the Peabody Art Collection. The Peabody Works on Paper Collection consists of approximately 1,100 works, including simple pencil sketches and pen and ink drawings, some created as studies for larger works of art completed in oil, as well as more intricate and complete watercolor compositions. During the 1930s, a narrowing of the Peabody Institute's mission forced the closure of the art gallery and its collection of works on paper was placed on deposit at the Baltimore Museum of Art. In 1996, the Maryland Commission on Artistic Property became the custodian of the collection when the state of Maryland assumed ownership of the Peabody Art Collections. The collection remains on loan to the Baltimore Museum of Art.

In addition to the Peabody Works on Paper Collection, the state-owned art collection also contains several important prints, lithographs and mixed media works.
