This mirror was originally owned by Thomas Johnson, Jr.(1732-1819) , The first Governor of Maryland and was presented to the state on August 2, 1960.
Overmantel mirror

This overmantel mirror, dating to the late 19th century, was most likely part of the original furnishings of the governor’s office as it was furnished following the construction of the State House annex in 1905. Given its age, it is possible that it was on display in the State House since the Victorian era redecorations of the building. The earliest photographs of the 20th century governor’s office show the mirror in place above the historic mantel.

The eglomise panel (a French term referring to painted glass) in this pier mirror depicts a naval battle during the War of 1812 on Lake Champlain, New York, when the American ship was led by Thomas McDonough (1783-1815). This is a reproduction mirror made in the style of those popular in America during the mid 19th century.
