DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE EIGHTH OF 14 SHEETS OF AN EXPERIMENTAL ATLAS ENTITLED MARYLAND & DELAWARE HISTORICAL ATLAS OF COUNTIES 1790-1970 THAT WAS PRODUCED USING A COMPUTER- DIRECTED PEN PLOTTER. THE ATLAS IS SIGNIFICANT PRIMARILY BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST ATLAS OF HISTORICAL MAPS DRAWN ENTIRELY BY COMPUTER. HFC'S COPY WAS A GIFT FROM THE NEWBERRY LIBRARY AND WAS LITERALLY THE FIRST EVER PRODUCED.

THE DATA FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MAPS IS FROM THE U.S. HISTORICAL COUNTY DATA FILE, COMPILED IN 1975-77 BY JOHN H. LONG UNDER THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE NEWBERRY LIBRARY, CHICAGO, AND SUPPORTED BY A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES. THE BEST INFORMATION SOURCES FOR THE FILE WERE THE ORIGINAL STATE LEGISLATIVE RECORDS. THE HANDBOOK OF MARYLAND BOUNDARIES, WHICH ACCOMPANIES THE ATLAS, DESCRIBES HOW THE MAPS WERE COMPILED AND DETAILS INFORMATION ON ALL THE CHANGES IN THE BOUNDARIES AND SEATS OF GOVERNMENT IN MARYLAND.

THE NAMES OF THE COUNTIES AND COUNTY SEATS DO NOT APPEAR ON THE MAPS BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE OBSCURED SOME OF THE LINE WORK. THE LOCATION OF EACH SEAT OF GOVERNMENT IS INDICATED BY A RED SQUARE ON THE MAP, AND THE NAME OF THE PLACE CAN BE FOUND IN THE CHRONOLOGIES IN THE HANDBOOK. EACH COUNTY IS IDENTIFIED BY A CODE NUMBER THAT APPEARS JUST BELOW THE COUNTY SEAT SYMBOL ON THE MAP. CORRELATIONS OF CODE NUMBERS AND NAMES ARE FOUND IN THE INDIVIDUAL COUNTY CHRONOLOGIES IN THE HANDBOOK AND IN A TABLE AT THE FRONT OF THE ATLAS.

THIS AND THE OTHER COMPUTER-PLOTTED MAPS ARE AT THE SAME SCALE AND PROJECTION AS THE MAP OF MARYLAND AND DELAWARE PUBLISHED BY THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY IN ITS 1:1,000,000 SCALE STATE BASE MAP SERIES. IT IS POSSIBLE, THEREFORE, TO SLIDE A COPY OF THE USGS MAP UNDER ANY ONE OF THE HISTORICAL MAPS TO COMPARE THE OLD BOUNDARIES WITH THE INFORMATION IN TODAY'S MAP.

DATA IS TAKEN FROM THE ATLAS AND FROM A LETTER DATED 12/13/78 FROM DAVID WOODWARD OF THE NEWBERRY LIBRARY.

EDITION & STATE INFO : SINCE THIS IS A MAP FROM A COMPUTER GENERATED ATLAS, EACH ATLAS IS SEPARATELY GENERATED AND THEREFORE THE CONCEPTS OF EDITION AND STATE ARE NOT MEANINGFUL. IN A LETTER FROM DAVID WOODWARD OF THE NEWBERRY LIBRARY, HE STATES "THE ATLAS WE HAVE COMPILED FOR YOU IS A HISTORICAL MILESTONE IN ITS OWN RIGHT. IT IS LITERALLY THE FIRST ATLAS OF HISTORICAL MAPS DRAWN ENTIRELY BY COMPUTER."

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY OF THIS MAP AS PART OF A BOUND ATLAS ENTITLED MARYLAND & DELAWARE HISTORICAL ATLAS OF COUNTIES 1790 - 1970. THE MAP HAS AN ACQ. # OF NL022-GIFT* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-132(8).

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : NO PUBLISHED REFERENCES WERE FOUND EXCEPT THE ATLAS ITSELF, A LETTER FROM DAVID WOODWARD DATED 12/13/78 TO RUSS MORRISON, AND LONG, JOHN H., HANDBOOK OF MARYLAND BOUNDARIES, CHICAGO: NEWBERRY LIBRARY, 1978.
