THE DATA CONTAINED IN THE FIRST SIX CHARTS. THE CHART IS COPIED
DIRECTLY FROM A U.S.C.G.S BASE CHART, BUT WITH COURSES PLOTTED AND
LABELED. IT IS CONTAINED IN A TYPEWRITTEN BUT BOUND HANDBOOK DONE
BY LIEUTENANT FRED H. WAGNER, NAVIGATING OFFICER & CHIEF ENGINEER,
NAVAL BRIGADE, M.N.G., BALTIMORE, MD. IN 1904. THIS HANDBOOK IS
THE TYPE PREPARED BY EACH NAVAL OFFICER AT THE TURN ON THE CENTURY.
IT PRINTS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON EVERY PHASE OF NAVAL OPERATIONS.
THE SECOND HALF OF THE BOOK CONCENTRATES ON NAVIGATION, THE
OFFICER'S SPECIALTY.
THE CHART SHOWS SOUNDINGS, BUOYS, AND GIVES THE PLOTTED COURSE AND
THE NAVIGATION AIDS. SINCE THE HANDBOOK WAS TYPEWRITTEN, IT WAS
NOT PUBLISHED AND MUST BE CONSIDERED A MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT. DATA
IS BASED ON AN EXAMINATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD
COLLECTION.
