DESCRIPTION : THIS DETAILED LITHOGRAPHIC MAP OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA APPEARS TO BE BASED LARGELY ON THE COUNTY ATLAS MATERIAL THAT WAS SO WIDELY AVAILABLE BY THE EARLY 1880s. THE GENERAL LAYOUT AND COLORING IS SIMILAR AND THE MAP IS ORGANIZED INTO ELECTION DISTRICTS, EACH OF WHICH BEARS ITS OWN COLOR. RAILROADS IN OPERATION AND PROPOSED ARE LOCATED AND NAMED. AN INSET OF THE SOUTHERN VIRGINIA COUNTIES SURROUNDING THE JAMES AND YORK RIVERS IS SHOWN. IT HAS THE SAME DETAIL AS THE MAIN MAP OTHER THAN FOR THE ELECTION DISTRICTS. LITTLE DETAIL IS GIVEN IN THE MAIN MAP OF THE WESTERN SHORE COUNTIES OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA AND SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY ARE UNCOLORED AND LACKING IN DETAIL OF NAMES, EXCEPT FOR THE ROUTES AND NAMES OF RAILROADS.

THE TITLE MATERIAL INDICATES THAT THE MAP IS BASED ON U.S. COAST SURVEY MATERIAL, BUT THIS COULD WELL HAVE BEEN AN EFFORT BY THE PUBLISHER TO DISGUISE THE USE OF RIVAL COUNTY ATLASES AS THE MAIN SOURCE AND TO ADD TO ITS APPARENT AUTHENTICITY.

THERE IS NO HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION ON SOUNDINGS AND BOTTOM CONDITIONS. THE DELAWARE AND CHESAPEAKE BAYS AND RIVERS ARE SHOWN AS PARALLEL LINES, CONFORMING TO THE COASTLINES.

NO PUBLISHED SOURCE HAS BEEN FOUND ON THIS MAP. IT IS NOT LISTED IN PHILLIPS. DATA IS FROM THE COPY AND PHOTOCOPY OF THE TWO EDITIONS OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : WRITER HAS EXAMINED ONE COPY OF THIS MAP DATED 1884 AND ONE DATED 1899. BOTH ARE LISTED AS ENTERED IN 1883. THE MAP IS SO EXTENSIVELY REVISED AS TO LAYOUT, INSETS, ADDITIONAL DATA, ETC. THAT IT IS LIKELY THAT A SEPARATE STONE WAS USED IN THE TWO EDITIONS. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN ADDITIONAL EDITIONS OR STATES NOT YET EXAMINED.

ED. 1 - (1884) - THE TITLE IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE BELOW THE CENTER. THE DATE 1884 IS IN THE TITLE. THERE IS NO INSET OF THE MOUTH OF THE CHESAPEAKE. TABLES OF NAMES OF MARYLAND, DELAWARE AND VIRGINIA RIVERS, BAYS, CREEKS, INLETS, CAPES, POINTS, ISLANDS AND TOWNS ARE INCLUDED. THE COPY EXAMINED WAS IN THE COLLECTION OF DR. LAURENCE CLAGGETT OF EASTON, MARYLAND. SEE MAP # 384S5.

ED. 2 - (1899) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE TITLE IS ON THE LEFT SIDE BELOW THE CENTER. THE DATE IN THE TITLE IS CHANGED TO 1899. THERE IS AN UNTITLED INSET OF THE MOUTH OF THE CHESAPEAKE IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER AND THE NAME TABLES FROM EDITION 1 HAVE BEEN DELETED.

NO REFERENCES TO THIS MAP HAVE YET BEEN FOUND. DATA IS BASED ON EXAMINATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND ON ONE EXAMINED IN THE LAURENCE CLAGGETT COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD CLEAN COLORED COPY BACKED WITH LINEN AND ATTACHED TO A MAP FOLDER WITH THE TITLE "MAP OF PENINSULA DEL. MD. VA." IN GOLD LEAF. THERE ARE SMALL MARGINAL TEARS ALONG SOME OF THE FOLDS. THE FOLDER IS HANDSTAMPED AS THE PROPERTY OF THE PHILADELPHIA PRESS, WHICH IN THE PAST WAS THE OWNER. THE ACQ. # IS H016-DIE AND THE MDHR # IS MSA SC1399-533. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS AN 8 X 10" PHOTOGRAPH OF THE 1884 1ST EDITION FROM THE COLLECTION OF DR. LAURENCE CLAGGETT OF EASTON, MD. THE MDHR # OF THE PHOTO IS MSA SC1399-674.

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : NONE YET FOUND.
