THE TITLE MATERIAL INDICATES THAT THE MAP IS BASED ON U.S. COAST SURVEY MATERIAL, BUT THIS COULD WELL HAVE BEEN AN EFFORT BY THE PUBLISHER TO DISGUISE THE USE OF RIVAL COUNTY ATLASES AS THE MAIN SOURCE AND TO ADD TO ITS APPARENT AUTHENTICITY.
THERE IS NO HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION ON SOUNDINGS AND BOTTOM CONDITIONS. THE DELAWARE AND CHESAPEAKE BAYS AND RIVERS ARE SHOWN AS PARALLEL LINES, CONFORMING TO THE COASTLINES.
NO PUBLISHED SOURCE HAS BEEN FOUND ON THIS MAP. IT IS NOT LISTED IN PHILLIPS. DATA IS FROM THE COPY AND PHOTOCOPY OF THE TWO EDITIONS OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : WRITER HAS EXAMINED ONE COPY OF THIS MAP DATED 1884 AND ONE DATED 1899. BOTH ARE LISTED AS ENTERED IN 1883. THE MAP IS SO EXTENSIVELY REVISED AS TO LAYOUT, INSETS, ADDITIONAL DATA, ETC. THAT IT IS LIKELY THAT A SEPARATE STONE WAS USED IN THE TWO EDITIONS. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN ADDITIONAL EDITIONS OR STATES NOT YET EXAMINED.
ED. 1 - (1884) - THE TITLE IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE BELOW THE CENTER. THE DATE 1884 IS IN THE TITLE. THERE IS NO INSET OF THE MOUTH OF THE CHESAPEAKE.
