DESCRIPTION : THIS LARGE SCALE CHART COVERS THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE AND DELAWARE BAYS. IT IS RICH IN HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION SUCH AS DATA ON SOUNDINGS, NAVIGATIONAL LIGHTS AND SHIPS, BUOYS, MAGNETIC VARIATION, SHOALS, BAY BOTTOM CONDITIONS AND TIDES. MAJOR NAVIGATIONAL LIGHTS ARE SHOWN IN YELLOW. THE TOPOGRAPHY IS TAKEN FROM U.S. COAST SURVEY SOURCES, REDRAWN BY ROBERT C. CARRINGTON, ENGRAVED BY J.& C. WALKER, PUBLISHED IN LONDON BY THE BRITISH ADMIRALTY UNDER REAR ADMIRAL JOHN WASHINGTON, WHO WAS HYDROGRAPHER OF THE BRITISH ADMIRALTY FROM 1855 TO 1863. WASHINGTON GREATLY INCREASED THE CIRCULATION OF BRITISH ADMIRALTY CHARTS DURING HIS TENURE. THE CHART WAS SOLD BY J.D. POTTER, AGENT FOR THE ADMIRALTY CHARTS.

THE LAND AREAS ON THIS CHART SHOW ROADS, CANALS, RAILROADS, CITIES AND TOWNS. HUNTINGFIELD POINT IS INDICATED ON THE CHART. ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN 1862, THIS CHART WOULD HAVE BEEN USED AT THAT TIME BY BRITISH SHIPS DURING THE LAST YEARS OF THE U.S. CIVIL WAR. THE CHART WAS MODIFIED WITH BOTH MAJOR AND MINOR MODIFICATIONS AND OTHER STATES WERE ISSUED AT LEAST THROUGH MARCH OF 1885. HUNTINGFIELD HAS A COPY OF THIS 1885 ISSUE AS WELL AS THE ORIGINAL ISSUE OF 1862. THIS MORE RECENT ISSUE SHOWS MAJOR CORRECTIONS THROUGH APRIL, 1871 AND MINOR ONES THROUGH 1885. OTHER LATER RELEASES WERE PROBABLY ALSO MADE.

DATA IS FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE CHARTS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM DAWSON'S MEMOIRS OF HYDROGRAPHY...

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS CHART HAD A LONG LIFE. FIRST RELEASED IN 1862, ISSUES CONTINUED AT LEAST THROUGH MARCH OF 1885. THE MAGNETIC VARIATION DATA AND OTHER DATA WAS CONTINUALLY UPDATED. IT IS LIKELY THAT LATER ISSUES WERE ALSO MADE. FOR THE 1862 CHART, SEE CHART # 362C5.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS CHART WITH NO TEARS AND WITH FULL MARGINS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B015-HGD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-661. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL ISSUE OF 1862 WITH TEARS THAT HAVE BEEN REPAIRED ON THE RIGHT AND TOP SIDES, BOTH OF WHICH EXTEND INTO THE ENGRAVING. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF N026-HGD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-662.1
