DESCRIPTION : THIS DETAILED TWO SHEET CHART OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, PUBLISHED BY THE BRITISH ADMIRALLTY, IS BASED ON THE U.S. COAST SURVEY SIX SHEET CHART OF 1859, WITH TOPOGRAPHY FROM EDMUND BLUNT'S CHART OF 1861. THE NOTES ARE CONFUSING WITH REGARD TO THE ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS. THE TITLE BLOCK INDICATES THAT IT WAS CORRECTED THROUGH 1870. THE DATE IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN SUGGESTS APRIL, 1871, BUT THE NOTE ON MAGNETIC VARIATION INDICATES DATA THROUGH 1883. THIS SHEET COVERS THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE BAY NORTH OF ST. MARY'S. MAP # 384B5 COVERS THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE BAY.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE EXPLANATORY NOTES ON THE CHART SUGGEST THAT IT WAS FREQUENTLY REPUBLISHED, WITH ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS FROM 1861 THROUGH AT LEAST 1884.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY OF BOTH SHEETS OF THIS CHART AS DESCRIBED ON HEAVY PAPER. BOTH SHEETS HAVE AN ACQ. # OF B015-DIG AND MDHR #S OF MSA SC1399-608(1) [LOWER BAY SHEET] AND MSA SC1399-608(2) [UPPER BAY SHEET].

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : NONE FOUND.
