DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA WAS ISSUED AS SKETCH NO. 6 TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK DURING THE YEAR ENDING WITH JUNE, 1877. IT GIVES TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. THE SKETCH ALSO SHOWS BY DOTTED LINES THE AERIAL EXTENT OF MORE DETAILED SHEETS OF THE TOPOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY, WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT AND NEVER PUBLISHED OR ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC, TOGETHER WITH THEIR NUMBERS AND DATES OF EXECUTION. ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC, TIDAL AND CURRENT STATIONS IN USE ARE NOTED.

IN FISCAL 1876-7, A SPECIAL SURVEY WAS MADE OF THE BALTIMORE HARBOR, PAID FOR BY A SPECIAL APPROPRIATION FROM THE STATE OF MARYLAND. A CAREFUL TRIANGULATION WAS MADE BY ASSISTANT J.W. DONN IN JULY AND AUGUST, 1876. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE ENTIRE WHARF-LINE WAS MEASURED AS A CHECK AND FOR COMPARISON WITH THE DETERMINATIONS OF THE PLANE-TABLE. TIDE STATIONS WERE ESTABLISHED. SOUNDINGS BEGAN IN EARLY OCTOBER. AFTER A PERIOD WHEN WORK WAS STOPPED FOR BAD WEATHER, ON THE 1st OF JUNE, 1877, WORK RESUMED. SOME 17,400 SOUNDINGS WERE MADE. SOME 1443 ANGLES WERE MEASURED FOR DETERMINING THE POSITION OF THE BOAT WHILE SOUNDING IN MIDWATER. THE WORK WAS COMPLETED ON FIVE TOPOGRAPHICAL AND 5 HYDROGRAPHIC SHEETS.

WORK WAS DONE IN THE FISCAL YEAR TO ASSIST THE BOUNDARY COMMISSIONERS OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA IN CONNECTION WITH THEIR WORK OF DETERMINING THE MARYLAND-VIRGINIA BOUNDARY IN THE VICINITY OF SMITH'S ISLAND.

THERE WAS A RESUMPTION OF WORK ON THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE JAMES RIVER AND THE PLANE-TABLE SURVEY EASTWARD FROM NORFOLK TO KEMPVILLE WAS EXTENDED. ALL THE ROADS WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE PLANE-TABLE SHEET WERE TRACED AND MAPPED.

ADDITIONS WERE MADE TO COAST CHART NO. 31, ENTRANCE TO CHESAPEAKE BAY, HAMPTON ROADS, ETC. AND TO COAST CHART NO. 36, MAGOTHY RIVER TO HEAD OF BAY, AND TO THE CHART OF HAMPTON ROADS, VIRGINIA. A CHART ENTITLED HAMPTON ROADS AND NORFOLK HARBOR, VIRGINIA, ON A SCALE OF 1-30,000 WAS BEGUN. THE JAMES RIVER CHARTS NOS. 1 AND 2 ON A 1-40,000 SCALE WERE COMPLETED AS WERE TWO SIMILAR CHARTS ON A 1-50,000 SCALE, WHICH WERE DONE BY PHOTOLITHOGRAPH.

DATA IS FROM THE 1877 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.
