MATHEWS NOTES THAT MANY OF THE COUNTY ATLASES OF MARYLAND IN THE 1870S WERE REPRODUCTIONS OF SIMON MARTENET'S WORK, WITH THE AUTHOR'S CONSENT, POSSIBLY ON A ROYALTY BASIS. WE CANNOT CONFIRM THAT THIS IS THE CASE FOR THE TALBOT AND DORCHESTER COUNTY ATLAS.
D. JACKSON LAKE BECAME A COUNTY ATLAS PUBLISHER IN 1870 AND WAS ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S MOST PROLIFIC. HIS FIRST ATLAS OF A MARYLAND COUNTY WAS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, DONE IN 1873. IN 1877, HIS FIRM, NOW LAKE, GRIFFING & STEVENSON, PUBLISHED ATLASES COVERING 10 COUNTIES IN THE STATE, EIGHT ON THE EASTERN SHORE. THESE COUNTY ATLASES WERE LITHOGRAPHED AND PRINTED BY C.O. TITUS PRIOR TO 1876. IN 1877 AND LATER, THEY WERE GENERALLY LITHOGRAPHED BY WORLEY & BRACHER OF PHILADELPHIA AND PRINTED BY FREDERICK BOURQUIN OF THAT CITY. HOWEVER, THE TALBOT AND DORCHESTER COUNTY ATLAS WAS PRINTED BY H.J. TOUDY OF PHILADELPHIA.
RISTOW STATES THAT LAKE'S ATLASES PRIOR TO 1875 CONTAINED FEW OR NO ILLUSTRATIONS BUT THAT AFTER THAT DATE THEY FOLLOWED THE GENERAL PRACTICE OF HAVING ILLUSTRATIONS OF INDUSTRIAL ESTABLISHMENTS, INTERIORS AND EXTERIORS OF BUSINESSES, FARMSTEADS AND RESIDENCES, PORTRAITS OF LANDOWNERS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND OF OTHER PUBLIC, HISTORIC OR SCENIC PLACES.
DATA IS FROM MATHEWS, RISTOW AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THE ATLAS AND MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE OF THIS MAP AND THE ATLAS IN WHICH IT APPEARS IS KNOWN.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE ATLAS IN PARTIALLY DETERIORIATED CONDITION. THE MAP HAS SOME BROWNING BUT IS GENERALLY GOOD. THE HUNTINGFIELD COPY SHOWS THE BALTIMORE, CHESAPEAKE AND ATLANTIC RR DRAWN IN MANUSCRIPT. THE MAP HAS AN ACQ. # OF UN012-UDTQ* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-671(2).
