MATHEWS NOTES THAT MANY OF THE COUNTY ATLASES OF MARYLAND IN THE 1870S WERE REPRODUCTIONS OF SIMON MARTENET'S WORK, WITH THE AUTHOR'S CONSENT, POSSIBLY ON A ROYALTY BASIS.
D. JACKSON LAKE BECAME A COUNTY ATLAS PUBLISHER IN 1870 AND WAS ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S MOST PROLIFIC. HIS FIRST ATLAS OF A MARYLAND COUNTY WAS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, DONE IN 1873. IN 1877, HIS FIRM, NOW LAKE, GRIFFING & STEVENSON, PUBLISHED ATLASES COVERING 10 COUNTIES IN THE STATE, EIGHT ON THE EASTERN SHORE.
RISTOW STATES THAT LAKE'S ATLASES PRIOR TO 1875 CONTAINED FEW OR NO ILLUSTRATIONS BUT THAT AFTER THAT DATE THEY FOLLOWED THE GENERAL PRACTICE OF HAVING ILLUSTRATIONS OF INDUSTRIAL ESTABLISHMENTS, INTERIORS AND EXTERIORS OF BUSINESSES, FARMSTEADS AND RESIDENCES, PORTRAITS OF LANDOWNERS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND OF OTHER PUBLIC, HISTORIC OR SCENIC PLACES.
DATA IS FROM MATHEWS, PAPENFUSE & COALE AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THIS ATLAS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : IT IS THOUGHT THAT ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE OF THE ATLAS AND THE MAP WERE ISSUED.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HUNTINGFIELD HAS THE ATLAS IN WHICH THIS MAP APPEARS. THE ATLAS HAS BEEN REBOUND AND THE PAGES HAVE BEEN ENCAPSULATED IN MYLAR AND DEACIDIFIED. THIS MAP IS IN GOOD CONDITION. PRIOR TO CONSERVATION IT HAD SOME BROWNING IN THE MARGIN AND WAS TORN ALONG THE CENTERFOLD. THE MAP AND THE INSERTS ARE IN COLOR AS ISSUED. THE MAP HAS AN ACQ. # OF H022-DH2Q* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-264(10).
