DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART AND PLATE HISTORY CARDS, U.S.C.S. ANNUAL REPORTS TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE FOR CHART 383 WAS PLATE 180, WHICH WAS BEGUN IN FEBRUARY, 1848 AND COMPLETED IN FEBRUARY, 1849. THIS PLATE WAS USED TO MAKE ALTO AND BASSO COPIES. THE PLATE 181 WAS DONE IN MAY, 1854 AS ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 1, BUT THE PLATE HISTORY CARD INDICATES THAT IT WAS "PROBABLY DESTROYED". ANOTHER BASSO COPY WAS MADE AND CORRECTED TO 1854 AND GIVEN THE PLATE NUMBER 376. THE FINISHED PLATE WAS RECEIVED ON JUNE 26, 1854 AND WAS ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 2 A FURTHER PLATE 1275 WAS MADE FROM ANOTHER BASSO COPY IN 1875. THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION WERE UPDATED TO 1875. SUBSEQUENT PLATE CHANGES IN PLATE 1275 WERE MADE TO UPDATE AIDS TO NAVIGATION IN 1881, 1883, 1884 AND 1895. THE CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 383 HAS THE NOTATION THAT THE PLATE LAST APPEARED IN THE CATALOG OF 1897 AS THE EDITION OF 1849. IN APRIL, 1899, PLATE 1275 WAS REISSUED WITH THE CHART STILL DESIGNATED AS # 383. HOWEVER, THAT PLATE AND THE CHART THEREFROM ARE LISTED AS HAVING BEEN CANCELLED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY ON 4/4/99 BY DIRECTION OF THE ASSISTANT IN CHARGE.
ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1849) - THIS IS THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE 180, USED FROM 1849 TO 1854 AND FROM WHICH ALTO AND BASSO COPIES WERE MADE. THE TOP MARGIN HAS ONLY ONE NOTATION AND THAT IS ON THE LEFT SIDE. IT READS "No. 383". SEE CHART # 349U5.
- STATE 2 - (1854) - THE TOP MARGIN, LEFT SIDE READS "HARBOR MAP No.". THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TOP MARGIN READS "ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 1 [OR 2] BY G. MATHIOT U.S.C.S." UNDER THE TITLE "MOUTH OF CHESTER RIVER" IS THE LINE "HARBOR OF REFUGE NO. )". THE CHART RETAINS THE DATE 1849 UNDER THE TITLE. THIS CHART IS ON PLATE 376. SEE CHART # 354U4.
- STATE 3 - (1875) - THE TOP MARGIN READS "No. 383" ON THE LEFT AND ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 3 U.S.C.S." ON THE RIGHT. THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION ARE UPDATED TO 1875 AND LATER IN 1881, 1883, 1884, AND 1895 ON THE SAME PLATE. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.

SUBSEQUENTLY A PHOTOLITH PLATE WAS MADE AND IN FEBRUARY, 1912, A FIRST EDITION UNDER CHART NO. 548 COVERING THIS AREA WAS ISSUED. A SECOND EDITION OF THIS SAME CHART NUMBER WAS MADE ON JUNE 1, 1934 WITH AN INSET OF KENT ISLAND NARROWS ON A SCALE OF 1:10,000 WITH 1927 DATUM. SOME 22 EDITIONS WERE ISSUED THROUGH APRIL 21, 1984 WITH EVEN MORE FREQUENT PRINTS. ON JULY 1, 1974 THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED TO 12272 WHEN THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY CHANGED ITS NUMBERING SYSTEM.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS TWO BEAUTIFUL COPIES ON HEAVY PAPER OF EDITION 1, STATE 1 WITH EXTREMELY WIDE MARGINS, PRINTED IN BLUISH-GREEN INK. THE PRINTS ARE STRIKES FROM PLATE 180, DONE AROUND 1970. THEY BOTH HAVE ACQ. #s OF NOAA012-GIFT AND MDHRs # OF MSA SC1399-693 AND 695, RESPECTIVELY. THE COLLECTION HAS A COPY IN SIMILAR CONDITION OF EDITION 1, STATE 2, WITH A SIMILAR ACQ. # AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-694. IT WAS PLATE 376 AND ALSO WAS A STRIKE AROUND 1970. HFC ALSO HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY ON HEAVY PAPER FROM PLATE 1275 OF EDITION 1, STATE 3. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF N026-DTG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-030. THE COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY OF THIS SAME STATE WITH AN ACQ. # OF NOAA013-GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-725. IN ADDITION, THE COLLECTION HAS ONE EDITION OF CHART 548, WHICH SUCCEEDED CHART 383 AND SEVERAL EDITIONS OF NOAA CHART 12272, WHICH REPLACED CHART 548.
