TABLE OF NOTES, SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS (BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER). THE SKETCH IS WIDER BETWEEN THE NEAT LINES ON THE BOTTOM THAN AT THE TOP (57.7 CM. AT TOP AND 58.9 CM. AT BOTTOM). ENGRAVED DATA EXTENDS THROUGH THE NEAT LINES ON THE LEFT, TOP AND RIGHT MARGINS. THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. LONGITUDE WEST FROM GREENWICH (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
DURING 1875, A SPECIAL SURVEY ON A SCALE OF 1-1,200 WAS MADE FOR THE ORDNANCE BUREAU OF THE NAVY DEPARTMENT OF THE AREA OF CRANEY ISLAND, VIRGINIA. TO COMPLETE THE CHART OF ELIZABETH RIVER, THE SHALLOW PASSAGE BETWEEN CRANEY ISLAND AND THE MAINLAND WAS SOUNDED IN AUGUST, 1874 AND SEVERAL LINES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY ADDED. A SURVEY OF THE CHICAHOMINY RIVER, VIRGINIA WAS CONTINUED BEYOND SHIP YARD. THE TRIANGULATION OF THAT RIVER WAS CONTINUED TO THE HEAD OF NAVIGATION. THEN THE TOPOGRAPHY WAS DONE ABOUT ONE MILE WIDE ON EITHER BANK AS FAR UP THE STREAM AS THE CANAL AT FORGE BRIDGE. THE SURVEY OF THE JAMES RIVER WAS RESUMED AT SLOOP POINT. AS THE WORK ADVANCED TOWARD CITY POINT, THE DETAILS OF TOPOGRAPHY WERE MAPPED ON EACH SIDE OF THE RIVER. MAGNETIC OBSERVATIONS CONTINUED IN WASHINGTON AND TIDAL OBSERVATIONS AT OLD POINT COMFORT. TRIANGULATION IN THE INTERIOR OF VIRGINIA ALONG THE BLUE RIDGE CONTINUED, AS SHOWN BY SKETCH NO. 8 IN THE ANNUAL REPORT.
THE DRAWING DIVISION COMPLETED THE DRAWING OF CHARTS OF POTOMAC RIVER, INDIAN HEAD TO LITTLE FALLS BRIDGE, OF CRANEY ISLAND, VIRGINIA AND OF NORFOLK HARBOR, ELIZABETH RIVER AND BRANCHES. THE PLATES OF COAST CHARTS NO. 29 AND 30, CHINCOTEAGUE INLET TO HOG ISLAND AND HOG ISLAND TO CAPE HENRY WERE COMPLETED AND THE ENGRAVING OF THE PLATE FOR SHEET 4 OF THE POTOMAC RIVER WAS CONTINUED.
DATA IS FROM THE 1875 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THE SKETCH IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.
